- Those with COVID-19 infection were especially at risk for the accelerated progression to clinical diabetes.
- Data from 591 youth were analyzed, with 509 included in the follow-up study.
- The incidence rate of developing clinical type 1 diabetes was higher during the pandemic period compared to the prepandemic period.
- The findings suggest that viral infections, such as COVID-19, may accelerate the progression of type 1 diabetes in children with presymptomatic diabetes.
