Review finds low certainty of evidence in studies on massage therapy for painful adult health conditions, published in JAMA Network Open.
• Most reviews of the use of massage therapy for painful adult health conditions report low- or very low-certainty evidence.
• A systematic literature review found that few conclusions regarding the benefits of massage therapy had greater than low certainty of evidence.
• Among the 17 systematic reviews covering 13 health conditions, no conclusions were rated as high certainty of evidence.
• However, seven conclusions were rated as moderate-certainty evidence, showing beneficial associations with pain.
• The authors suggest that clearer definitions of massage therapy and considerations on including multiple modalities in systematic reviews are needed to advance the field.
