A study conducted at UCSF reveals challenges in diagnosing patients at a pediatric rheumatology/dermatology clinic.
• 24% of patients presented to a pediatric rheumatology/dermatology clinic without a confirmed diagnosis, and only 41% received a diagnosis during their first visit.
• Integrated care models such as rheumatology/dermatology clinics have been shown to facilitate complete clinical evaluations and streamline care for patients with complex autoimmune skin diseases.
• A study at UCSF evaluated 71 patients who received care at a pediatric RDC, finding that the clinic significantly influenced patient care by confirming or revising diagnoses and modifying disease management.
• Nearly one in four patients presented at the clinic without a confirmed diagnosis, and systemic medication changes were made in 74% of patients on medication at presentation.
• Pediatric RDCs were found to be valuable for patient care and professional development, but only a quarter incorporate an educational conference for team members, according to a survey of 17 dermatologists.
