Summary
• Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory dermatosis that affects all age groups.
• This study aimed to compare the clinical severity and subjective impact of AD between Generation Z (GZ) and the millennial generation (MG).
• A cross-sectional observational study was conducted including 73 patients diagnosed with moderate to severe AD.
• Patients from Generation Z reported less severe AD compared to Millennials, but both generations had a similar perception of severity.
• Understanding generational disparities in AD severity can lead to more effective treatment strategies and personalized care for patients.
Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic skin condition that can impact patients of all ages. A recent study compared the severity of AD between Generation Z (GZ) and Millennials to better understand how the condition affects different age groups. The study focused on both objective measures, evaluated by dermatologists, and subjective assessments, made by the patients themselves.
Researchers conducted a cross-sectional observational study involving 73 patients diagnosed with moderate to severe AD, with some belonging to Generation Z and others to Millennials. They used established severity indices like the Eczema Area and Severity Index (EASI) and Investigator Global Assessment (IGA), as well as patient-assessed scales like SCORing Atopic Dermatitis (SCORAD) and Patient-Oriented Eczema Measure (POEM) to evaluate the severity of AD in each group.
The results showed that patients from Generation Z generally had lower objective severity of AD compared to Millennials. However, both groups had a similar subjective perception of the severity of their condition. This suggests that while the actual physical symptoms may vary between generations, the emotional and psychological impact of AD remains consistent across age groups.
In conclusion, the study highlighted the importance of understanding generational differences in the experience of AD. By acknowledging these disparities, healthcare professionals can tailor treatment strategies to meet the unique needs and expectations of each age group. This personalized approach to care can lead to more effective and targeted interventions for patients with AD, ultimately improving their quality of life. Healthcare providers are encouraged to consider the generational perspective when developing treatment plans for individuals with atopic dermatitis.
